About

BRICS TODAY is an independent publication, and not affiliated with any member country or associated organisations. The aim of this website is to serve as a portal into the emerging world of BRICS, bringing you the latest news and developments pertaining to the economic and geopolitical activities of the bloc.

The scope of this publication is not limited to BRICS alone, but rather aims to track and report on all important developments in the Global South, or what has come to be dubbed the global majority, and the emerging markets that contribute to the development of a multipolar world and a fair new global order. These areas involve, but are not limited to, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation(SCO), China’s Road and Belt Initiative, ASEAN, Africa, Latin America, de-dollarisation efforts and more.

What is BRICS?

The term itself is an acronym that stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. A cooperative group that has since come to adopted the interchangeable term ‘Plus’ in the wake of its expansion in 2024, with the addition of multiple new members. Today, BRICS+ is comprised of the fastest growing economies in the world, who seek to develop greater trade and investment ties amongst eachother, using a cooperation mechanism that seeks to empower developing countries. Though not necessarily a political bloc by design, BRICS+ countries are not without certain common interests, which may express themselves in terms of solidarity, if not necessarily overt political cooperation. This is despite the fact that current BRICS+ nations are culturally, ideologically and geographically diverse. Yet they share a common vision that has not waned despite many pessimistic predictions about the future of the bloc. Far from any threats of dissolution, the future of BRICS+ appears even stronger with the addition of a multitude of other emerging economies that seek shelter under a more sympathetic banner with a greater mutual understanding of each others unique requirements and challenges, whilst respecting each other’s diversities by not placing ideological or political requirements on the nature of their relationship.
