Further development ties have occures between Iran and Saudi Arabia, following the historical rapprochement that took place in March of 2023, skillfully brokered by Beijing. The two countries plan on reopening their embassies, on eachother’s soil in order to move onto the practical stage of establishing real diplomatic ties again. The process is expected to take place within a couple of months, and it is hoped that it will be followed by the reinstatement of previously held security and economic cooperation deals.
The resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia is seen as a major step towards regional stability. Both nations have expressed their desire to put the past behind them and to work towards a brighter future. This is a welcome change from the acrimony and hostility that had characterized their relationship for so long.
Once talks have commenced between the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia, it is expected that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will visit Riyadh. This visit is a clear signal that the two nations are serious about their commitment to reconciliation.
The strengthening of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia is not only important for the region, but it also has wider implications. It further ushers in a new geopolitical landscape, one in which the United States plays an ever decreasing role in the Middle East. For years, the US has been the dominant power in the region, but now its influence is waning. This is partly due to its own recent actions, but also because of the ever changing nature of the global landscape from a unipolar to a multipolar mode where no dominant power can have a hegemonic monopoly on the rest of the planet.
This renewal of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia has also been a keystone objective for Beijing. Both parties are very important to China and the BRICS bloc in general. Without reconciliation and reestablishment of ties, it would have proven a great challenge for the future of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Iran and Saudi Arabia have both expressed interest in joining the BRICS bloc, and both are now members of the SCO. Saudi Arabia has only recently joined as a dialogue partner, but it is clear that it is keen to deepen its relationship with China, and the resumption of ties with Iran is an important step towards this goal.
