New Development Bank (NDB): February 2024 Update

February 19, 2024
in BRICS, Business & Economics

The BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) has been actively engaging in several significant projects over the last few months, aiming to bolster its mission of supporting infrastructure and sustainable development in BRICS countries and other emerging economies. Here’s an overview of their recent activities, future plans, and strategic expansions.

Issuance of Panda Bonds

On February 1, 2024, the NDB announced the issuance of 6 billion yuan (approximately $844.5 million USD) of five-year panda bonds in the China Interbank Bond Market. This issuance marks the largest-ever five-year panda bond issuance by a multilateral development bank in this market. The success of this issuance reflects strong investor confidence in the bank’s strategic direction and its commitment to financing infrastructure and sustainable development projects

Loan Agreements with India

The NDB signed three loan agreements with India to enhance transport, water, and sanitation infrastructure, demonstrating its continuous effort to support critical development sectors in member countries

Expansion into Egypt and Bangladesh

The bank is exploring opportunities for financing airports, energy, water, social infrastructure in Egypt, and sustainable development in Bangladesh. This expansion signifies the bank’s effort to increase its footprint and impact in other emerging markets and developing economies

Additionally, with Egypt’s recent initiation into BRICS and its plans to issue bonds in the local currencies of NDB members, the bank is looking to diversify its investment and financing portfolio. This move is expected to support Egypt’s Vision 2030 by financing new projects with a social dimension and fostering a strong, sustainable strategic partnership with the NDB

Beyond the Horizon

The NDB’s focus areas include clean energy and energy efficiency, transport infrastructure, water and sanitation, environmental protection, social infrastructure, and digital infrastructure. By prioritizing high-impact operations that are climate-smart, disaster-resilient, technology-integrated, and socially-inclusive, the NDB aligns its operations with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.

The BRICS New Development Bank is on a dynamic path of expanding its influence and operations to support sustainable development across its member states and beyond. Through strategic partnerships, innovative financing mechanisms like the issuance of panda bonds, and a focus on high-impact projects, the NDB is set to play a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable future for emerging economies.
