On Saturday, September 1, 2024, the Board of Governors of the New Development Bank (NDB) in Cape Town officially granted membership status to Algeria. This decision marks a significant milestone for the North African nation, opening up new avenues for economic development by providing access to investment funds that stand in contrast to the predatory lending practices often associated with Western institutions such as the IMF.
As an oil-rich nation, Algeria’s inclusion in the NDB signals a strategic win for the BRICS bloc, further solidifying its influence in controlling key energy resources, commodities, and vital trade routes. With this move, BRICS strengthens its foothold in global energy markets as the group continues to reshape the global financial landscape.
By joining BRICS and the New Development Bank, Algeria stands to gain significant economic and geopolitical advantages. Membership provides access to non-predatory funding sources, enabling Algeria to invest in critical infrastructure, energy projects, and economic diversification without the burdensome conditions typically imposed by Western lenders. Additionally, Algeria’s proximity to Europe positions it as a vital bridge for BRICS, enhancing trade and energy cooperation between the bloc and European markets. With its strategic location along the Mediterranean and its role as a major gas supplier to Europe, Algeria strengthens BRICS’ influence in the energy sector, potentially offering the bloc leverage over European energy security, while deepening economic ties across continents.
